  • Brunswick Center, 189 Brunswick St, Jersey City, NJ 07302
This Thursday at 7:30 p.m. candidates running for the Jersey City Board of Education will take questions from Hamilton Park residents in a debate style forum at the Brunswick Center.

Jersey City Board of Education Candidate Forum, Thursday, October 5, 2017, 730 pm, at the Brunswick Center, 189 Brunswick St, Jersey City, NJ 07302, Whether you rent or own, our schools affect you.

Why the BOE Election is Important:

The Board of Education is responsible for allocating and overseeing a massive $ 681 Million budget for the Jersey City School District.  Even if you don't have children in public schools, the availability of quality public schools has an impact on property values and crucially, the culture of Jersey City and whether we are a city where residents drop roots and stay or whether we continue to be a transitory pit stop on the way to the suburbs.

    Key issues:

    • Efficient and equitable allocation of resources
    • Capacity; there are too few class rooms to accommodate the number of families moving to Jersey City.
    • Charter Schools

    Who is running?

Seven candidates are running for four open seats on the School Board.  Three of these seats are three-year terms, while the fourth seat is a one-year term.

    Three-Year Seats

Candidates Amy DeGise, Gerald Lyons, and Lorenzo Richardson are seeking re-election to their seats which are three-year seats.  They are being challenged by Yousef Saleh and Matthew Shapiro.

    One Year Seat Candidates:

Candidates Mussab Ali and David Miranda are running for a one-year unexpired seat, which arose after another Board Member resigned earlier this year.
